Land & livelihoods

From idle land to productive orchards

Community effort and programme convergence opened a pathway for cultivation on forest rights land in Abbayigudem.

From the Vanasamakhya Annual Report 2025–26

Maa Thota farmers in Abbayigudem had received about 25 acres under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Rocks and thorny bushes had kept that land unused.

Preparing the ground

Through convergence with MGNREGS, bushes and rocks were cleared and the land was developed. Fruit saplings were then planted through the NABARD-supported Maa Thota programme.

Securing water for the years ahead

Farm ponds were being constructed to harvest rainwater, improve groundwater recharge and help protect young orchards. The field account connects land development with water security rather than treating plantation as a standalone activity.

A pathway, still growing

The initiative brought previously idle land into productive use and created a foundation for longer-term livelihoods. The report does not yet quantify an income increase for these families.
